The Cave's Soldier SpiritA southern boy who was
fighting the South,
fighting for union,
and hoping to live.
The nephew of William Sherman,
his name was Obadiah.
He wore a blue uniform;
his father's was gray.
One day the two met,
father leading a rebel brigade,
son running rather than fight
the man who raised him.
Day and night he rode
astride a stolen stallion.
He stopped at Lookout Mountain,
entering the caves.
He and Titan (the horse)
lived a year underground
and alone.
Then the wounded came.
Both armies used the caves
as makeshift hospitals.
Obadiah helped them all,
regardless of uniform color.
He eased their sufferings
and gave them his all.
Yet when they left,
he stayed behind.
For Athena and Ares frown
upon cowards who flee war.
"Your spirit is bound forever
to these caves."
Obadiah never tried to leave,
but set Titan free.
The man lamented his cowardice
and faded to nothingness.
The caves were closed
to make the railroad system.
A spelunker found Ruby Falls
and brought the public.
